Can You Glue PVC to ABS?

The material used to soften the plastic to create a strong bond is PVC glue. PVC glue makes your work quick and easy. You can bond the plastic pipes within a short time through PVC glue.

ABS is the plastic pipes. These pipes are used in the drain waste vent pipe system, for a hot water drainage system, and insulation of electrical cables.

PVC glue is not used practically on ABS pipes. But sometimes, its use is perfect with ABS pipes. Through this article, you will be able to know how efficiently you can use PVC glue on ABS.

Difference Between PVC Pipes and ABS Pipes

Before jumping to process, you should know the difference between PVC pipes and ABS pipes.

1. PVC Pipes:

PVC pipe is one of the modern and cost-effective solutions for metal pipes. PVC pipe is a soft pipe that gives versatility durability and is very simple to install. PVC pipes are manufactured with polyvinyl chloride.

2. ABS Pipes:

ABS pipes are more rigid than PVC pipes. These pipes cannot mold as the PVC pipes. ABS pipes are manufactured with acrylonitrile-Butadiene-styrene, which is atmospheric resin.

How to Connect ABS Pipe to PVC Pipe?

Joining ABS and plastic pipes is possible with special transition fittings and correctly sized to pipe size. They meet the plumbing codes and make a good joint. A tool (socket wrench) and specific material (transition coupling) are required to connect the PVC pipe to ABS pipes.

If you are joining the ABS black and PVC white, don’t assume that you can easily glue them. Now we will discuss the method of joining PVC pipes and ABS pipes step by step. There are two main steps to connect the ABS pipe to the PVC pipe.

Step 1- Connecting PVC and ABS

In step 1, you will need to perform the following sub-steps.

  1. You should cut the piece to leave a 1/8in the—gap at both joints when inserting a pipe between two fixed ends.
  2. Then you need to slide and loosen the metal jacket. Then clamp off the rubber sleeve. And then slide the jacket onto the fixed pipes.
  3. After sliding the jacket onto the fixed points, you need to push one of the rubber sleeves onto the fixed pipe. And then roll back the other end. This process is applied to make room for the new piece of pipe.
  4. After making room for the new piece of pipe, you need to hold the new piece of pipe between the two fixed pipe ends. And then over the ends of the new pipe, unroll the rubber sleeves.
  5. After unrolling the rubber sleeves, slide the metal jacket over the rubber sleeves.
  6. You need to tighten the clamps. Snug them up with a socket wrench.

Step 2- Transition Coupling Close up

A transition coupling consists of a steel jacket and rubber sleeve. If you search for the proper way to use a transition coupling, it consists of a neoprene rubber sleeve. It fits over each pipe. Then it is held tight with a stainless steel metal jacket and integral clamps.

After that, the coupling will be labeled as which type of pipe (plastics PVC and ABS, cast, steel, copper, iron). Through this, each end can be fastened too. Look for plastic to plastic designation on the coupling. Transition coupling is the specific material for joining the PVC and ABS.

Can we Use Glue on PVC to ABS?

Most plumbing codes do not permit ABS pipe to be glued to PVC. Mostly, the answer is NO, but sometimes we can use PVC glue on ABS. You cannot glue them effortlessly together.

There are two commonly used plastics for waste, drain, and vent pipes inside homes; ABS (black) and PVC (white). Most plumbers use solvent cement (glue). This glue is just made for that material; things stick together.

It works with ABS when you need to connect both pipes, such as ABS pipes and PVC pipes.

How does Glue Works on PVC to ABS Pipe?

You will need PVC glue to join the PVC to ABS pipes. PVC glue breaks down and chemically bonds two PVC parts together. PVC glue makes parts inseparable. It is easy to apply and will set in minutes.

Does PVC Glue to ABS?

We have learned from the whole information that never tries to switch between ABS glue and PVC glue.

But when we need to join the connection of both pipes, we should use both of them combined. In the market, special green glue is available. This unique green glue is used only on the ABS.

PVC glue to ABS is only required when joining two systems. PVC glue to ABS means connecting two systems, such as when water drainage systems are outside and inside the home.

At that time, we connect them to utilize the green glue or PCV glue. It cannot be used in any other place.

How Much Time Needs to Dry PVC Glue?

When applying the PVC glue on the pipe, PVC glue dries in 30 seconds. Keep holding the pipes for proper bonding.

Its fully hardened bond may take 15 to 20 minutes. After two hours of its application, you can use it for water. ABS glue takes more time to dry as compared to PVC glue.

Capacity to Hold the Temperature for PVC Glue

The temperature has a significant effect on the bondage and performance of the glue. PVC glue works at -15 degrees Fahrenheit to 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

After using PVC glue, you cannot run the pipe’s boiling water. The capacity to hold the temperature for PVS glue is less than the ABS glue.

Final Thoughts

PVC pipes could not use as an alternative to ABS pipes because of their different properties. But sometimes, when you need to join different systems, you may connect the systems in a better way by joining PVC to ABS pipes.

It is a tricky but straightforward process; you must be very active because they are joined with PVC glue that takes just 15 seconds to dry.
